Artwork Series - Disrupted Identities
Created by Aimee Rowland, Disrupted Identities is a series of self-portrait paintings, that explore the autobiographical complexities of identity, through an aesthetic outcome engaging in emotional themes of mental illness. Using non-traditional canvases made from discarded clothing, which have been cut up, stitched back together, and stretched like a traditional canvas on a wooden frame, the work is about externalising that which is internal. As people, we are a walking façade where what is presented to society is most likely not who we are or how we feel. The emotive, the broken, the residual, the question, the fragile, the panic and the survival are all themes aesthetically represented in the series of three paintings. The paintings contain layers of meaning, symbolising the embodiment of identity and through abstracted portraiture, I convey my personal struggles with depression and provoke discussions about mental illness.
